Bedside tables UK, every size in cm

40 cm Bedside Tables

Every table on this page is 40 cm wide, give or take a centimetre, measured across the widest point. Forty centimetres is the median width of the 262 bedside tables we recorded from a British trade catalogue, and 71 of those 262 are exactly 40 cm wide, more than any other width but 45 cm. It is the nearest thing the UK has to a standard bedside table width.

The range runs from white, black and rattan pieces to solid mango wood, floor-standing and wall-mounted. At the same width they differ a lot in depth and height, so every product lists both in centimetres.

Will a 40 cm bedside table fit?

Measure from the side of the bed frame to the wall, at the height of the table top. A 40 cm table needs at least 40 cm; we would leave 2 cm on each side, so 44 cm. On the headboard wall, a double bed (135 cm) with a 40 cm table on each side takes 215 cm, a king (150 cm) takes 230 cm and a super king (180 cm) 260 cm. The same sum for every bed and table size is in our guide to bedside table dimensions.

There is an official echo of this width: the furniture schedule in Approved Document M of the Building Regulations allows for two bedside tables of 400 × 400 mm in a double bedroom.

Depth and height

The most common 40 cm footprint is 40 × 35 cm, which is 59 of the 262 tables. For height, match the top of your mattress within 5 cm: around 55 to 65 cm next to a divan, 45 to 55 cm next to a low platform bed. The height guide explains how to measure, and the tall and low ranges sort tables by it.

Not 40 cm? Narrower: 35 cm, 30 cm, 20 cm and narrow bedside tables. Wider: wide bedside tables. Or put your three measurements into the size checker.

Questions

What is the standard width of a bedside table in the UK?
About 40 cm. It is the median of the 262 bedside tables we recorded, and half of them are between 36 and 45 cm wide. No British Standard fixes it.

Is 40 cm a good width for a bedside table?
For a double or king bed in a typical bedroom, yes. It is the median width, and it is the size Approved Document M plans for. Go narrower only if the gap beside your bed is under about 44 cm.

What size bed suits two 40 cm bedside tables?
Add 80 cm to the width of your bed: 215 cm of wall for a double, 230 cm for a king, 260 cm for a super king.

How many inches is a 40 cm bedside table?
15.7 inches, just under 16.
