The three pairs, measured

Pair Each table (W × D × H) Storage Suits a mattress top at
Eden 30 cm, Chestnut 30 × 25 × 50 cm Open box 45 to 55 cm
Kennet 36 cm, light finish 36 × 26 × 40 cm One open shelf 35 to 45 cm
Swale 40 cm, tray top, Golden Teak 40 × 40 × 44 cm None: a raised rim on top 39 to 49 cm

The last column applies the usual rule: the top of the table within about 5 cm of the top of the mattress. None of the three pairs has a drawer; for drawers, see the bedside cabinets and buy two.

How much wall a pair needs

Add the width of the bed to both tables, plus a 2 cm working margin on each side. For UK mattress widths:

Bed With the 30 cm pair With the 36 cm pair With the 40 cm pair
Small double, 120 cm 184 cm 196 cm 204 cm
Double, 135 cm 199 cm 211 cm 219 cm
King, 150 cm 214 cm 226 cm 234 cm
Super king, 180 cm 244 cm 256 cm 264 cm

If your bed has a frame, measure the frame rather than the mattress, and use that width instead.

Measure both sides

Bedrooms are rarely symmetrical. One side is often against a wall and the other against a radiator or a door. Measure both gaps at their narrowest point and size the pair to the narrower of the two. The height guide covers the other measurement.

A pair, or two singles?

A pair is two identical tables in one order, so both sides of the bed sit at the same height. Two singles let you mix: a 20 cm table on the tight side and a wider one on the other, or a drawer on one side and an open shelf on the other. Each pair's page lists the other pairs with their widths and prices, and every single table is in all bedside tables.

Questions

Do bedside tables have to match?

No. A matching pair either side of a double bed looks balanced, but two different tables work well if their heights are close. A bed against a wall only needs one.

Should bedside tables be higher or lower than the bed?

Level with the top of your mattress, within about 5 cm either way. With a pair of identical tables, both sides are the same height.

How much space do you need for two bedside tables?

The width of the bed, plus both tables, plus about 2 cm of margin on each side. A double bed of 135 cm with two 36 cm tables needs 211 cm of wall.
