What to put on a bedside table, measured by width

A 30 cm wide chestnut bedside table beside a bed, with a table lamp on top

A lamp, a book and a glass need about 30 cm of width between them. Below that, something has to go. That is the whole answer, and it is why the width of the table matters more than any styling rule.

This guide works from numbers instead: the published sizes of 262 bedside tables and the usual size of what goes on top. The difference shows up at 20 cm.

What fits, by width

The objects are the ordinary ones, at their ordinary sizes: a lamp base is usually 12 to 18 cm across, a paperback about 13 cm wide, a hardback 16, a mug or a tumbler about 9, a phone 7. Nothing exotic.

Table width What genuinely fits on top What has to go elsewhere
20 cm A small lamp or a book and a glass. One of the two. Everything else. This is a surface for the thing you reach for in the dark, not a display.
30 cm A lamp and a phone, with a book on the shelf below. The glass, unless the lamp base is under 14 cm.
36 cm A lamp, a book and a glass, side by side. Nothing, until you add a second book.
45 cm A lamp, a stack of books, a glass and a charger, with space left. Nothing. This is the width where the question stops being a question.

If you already know the gap you have, put the three numbers into the size checker and it will tell you which tables fit before you worry about what goes on them.

The lamp is the thing that decides

A bedside lamp takes more width than people expect, because you measure the shade, not the base. A shade 30 cm across overhangs a 30 cm table completely, and then the table is a lamp stand with a bit of edge.

On anything under 35 cm, a wall light or a clip-on reading light gives you the whole surface back. It is the single change that makes a narrow table usable, and it costs less than buying a wider table you have no room for.

What to put in the drawer

The drawer is the part nobody plans, so it fills with receipts. What earns its place: the charging cable, a pen, a notebook, painkillers, earplugs, a spare hair tie, lip balm. What does not: anything you have not opened in a month, and anything you would not want a guest to find while looking for a charger.

A single drawer on a 30 cm table is about 25 cm wide once you take off the carcass sides. The maker does not publish the internal depth and we are not going to invent one, but the width alone tells you it holds a paperback lying flat rather than a stack of jumpers. Two shallow drawers hold less in total than one deep one, but they stay tidier, because a deep drawer becomes a bin. If the drawer is not enough, our small bedroom storage ideas measure what the bed, the walls and the door can take.

The styling advice that survives contact with a small table

Most of it does not. Odd numbers, layered heights, a tray to corral things, a small vase: all of it assumes a surface of 40 cm or more. On a narrow table, three rules are enough:

  • One tall thing, one flat thing, one small thing. Lamp, book, glass. Adding a fourth is what makes it look cluttered, not the objects themselves.
  • Leave the front edge clear. You reach for things in the dark. Anything within 5 cm of the front edge will eventually end up on the floor.
  • A tray only helps if it fits. A 25 cm tray on a 30 cm table leaves 5 cm of table. Either the tray is the surface or it is in the way.

If the table is the wrong height, none of this matters

A surface more than about 10 cm below the top of your mattress means reaching down every night, and no arrangement fixes that. We recorded the published dimensions of 262 floor-standing bedside tables for our height study: the median height is 57 cm, two thirds sit between 55 and 65 cm, and only 2 % reach 65. The height guide has the full study, with a chart you are free to republish.

Questions

What should you put on a bedside table?

A light, something to read and something to drink. On a table 36 cm wide or more all three fit side by side; under 30 cm you get two of the three, and a wall light gives you the third back.

How do you style a bedside table without it looking cluttered?

One tall object, one flat object, one small object, and the front 5 cm left clear. Clutter on a bedside table is almost always a width problem rather than a taste problem: the same four objects look considered on 45 cm and chaotic on 25.

What should you keep in a bedside table drawer?

The charging cable, a pen and notebook, painkillers, earplugs. A single drawer on a 30 cm table is about 25 cm wide once you take off the carcass sides, which holds a paperback lying flat rather than much more. The maker does not publish the internal depth, so we do not quote one.

What can you use instead of a bedside table?

A wall-mounted shelf keeps the floor clear and takes the same top surface; a stool works if the height matches your mattress. The wall-mounted range is here, and the narrow tables start at 20 cm wide. Every option, with the space it needs, is in bedside table alternatives.
