Mango Wood Bedside Tables

Every bedside table on this page has a solid mango wood body, all the way through. A few add another material where you can see it: a brass-plated drawer front, a woven rattan top, a woven drawer panel or a marble top. Not board with a printed wood finish, not veneer over chipboard. Mango is a dense hardwood with a visible, irregular grain, and each piece takes stain differently, which is why two tables from the same range are never quite identical. If you want a wooden bedside table that is real wood rather than a wood-effect finish, these are it.

Why mango wood

Mango trees are grown for fruit. After fifteen to twenty years they stop producing well and are felled as part of normal orchard management, which is what makes the timber available at this price. It is a by-product of farming rather than a reason to cut a forest.

The wood itself is hard enough to take daily use, heavy enough that the table does not slide when you pull a drawer, and open-grained enough to show the difference between a chestnut finish and a light one. The chestnut and California walnut ones are together in dark wood bedside tables.

What it means in practice

Solid mango Board with printed finish
Grain different on every piece repeats every few centimetres
Edges solid through edge banding that can lift
Weight heavy, stays put light, slides
Repair can be sanded and re-oiled a chip is permanent

Looking after it

Wipe with a damp cloth, dry it straight after. Do not stand a hot mug directly on the top. If the finish dulls after a few years, a light sand and a coat of clear wood oil brings it back, which is not something you can do with a printed surface.

Every one is measured

Each table here shows its width, depth and height in centimetres, on the card. For the wall-mounted pieces the height given is the height of the carcass, because a table that hangs has the height you fix it at, not a height of its own. If your gap is tight, start with the narrow range, which goes down to 20 cm wide. If you need a specific height, the height guide has the floor to mattress figures for each common UK bed type.

Questions

Is mango wood good for furniture?

Yes. It is a hardwood, comparable to acacia in density, and it is used for solid furniture rather than as a veneer. Its main limitation is the same as any solid timber: it does not like prolonged damp.

Is mango wood sustainable?

The timber comes from orchard trees felled at the end of their fruiting life. We do not claim a certification we have not seen, so we will put it plainly: it is a farming by-product, which is better than clearing forest, and that is the honest limit of what we can say about it.

Does mango wood darken over time?

Slightly, like most timbers, especially in direct sunlight. A pair bought together will age together, which is one more argument for the set of 2.
