What the price buys
The seven under £100 are engineered wood or MDF, as their suppliers describe them, mostly with a woven rattan drawer front or gold-tone legs. The cheapest is a 40 cm rattan table with an open shelf, at £51. From £101, most are solid mango wood, starting with two 20 cm tables for the narrowest gaps. The 18 tables between 44 and 50 cm wide give the most choice, from £56 on gold-tone legs to £307 with a marble top.
Which one fits
Measure the gap beside your bed at its narrowest point, skirting board included, and leave about 2 cm. For a gap under 32 cm, the 20 and 30 cm tables are the ones to look at; most of them are also 30 cm deep or less. For height, match the top of the table to the top of your mattress within about 5 cm. Floor-standing heights here run from 40 cm, for a low bed, to 68.5 cm, for a tall one. If the floor is taken, the wall-mounted tables leave it clear and go at whatever height you fix them.
